    World's oldest diamonds discovered

A clutch of ancient diamonds plucked from the hills of Western Australia has been identified as the oldest miscellany of the Earth's crust ever recovered.
The precious stones, which date back more than four billion years, were found inside rocks lodged in the sediments of a 80km long coastal ridge known as Jack Hills.

The stones shed light on the darkest age of Earth's evolution-the period between the planet's creation from a giant cosmic dust cloud 4.5 billion years ago and the formation of the oldest known rocks 500 million years later. The formal name given to the period-the Hadean-paints a picture of Earth as a hellish mass of molten lava, but analysis of the diamonds suggests the blackened landscape may have cooled much more quickly than previously thought.
Natural diamonds form under intense pressure and temperatures up to 1200C more than 96 kilometers below the Earth's crust. The oldest of the diamonds is thought to be 4.25 billion years old, suggesting that by this time the planet had already cooled enough to form a crust of solid rock.

A polished split bale secures the diamond to an 18-inch white gold rope chain that fastens with a spring ring clasp.

The scientists used a powerful electron microscope to examine ancient zircon rocks from an excavation site in the hills and identified microscopic inclusions of diamond inside them measuring at most a twentieth of a millimeter across.
Diamonds were found in 45 of the rocks and were believed to have formed over a period of more than 1 billion years.
the large spread of ages suggests two possibilities, according to the scientists report in the journal Nature.
Either the conditions for diamond formation occurred several times over in Earth's early history or ancient diamonds were churned over in the Earth's molten interior for millennia before becoming locked into the crust at different times.
Another possibility, according to Ian Williams, a geologist at the Australian National University, is that carbon rich fluids seeped into fissures in the zircon rocks billions of years ago.
As the rocks were then drawn into the Earth's interior the carbon deposits were compressed into diamonds and preserved in rocks that erupted from the surface much later.

    DIAMOND: NATURE'S MOST PRECIOUS CREATION

The diamond is generally regarded as the premier gem in the world of precious stones. Among all the precious stones the diamond has the simplest composition. It is merely crystallised carbon. The most common substance that is known, a substance that is present in every plant, animal and mineral on the earth.

Diamond come mostly from the mines in South Africa, but are also found in Brazil, India Australia and even in United States. The diamond is the hardest known substance on the earth. Despite its hardness, the diamond is not indestructlble: a diamond will cut diamond: it can be burned in the air, being carbon and will leave behind carbon dioxide gas.

The facets of a cut diamond can be worn away to some extent by the constant rubbing of clothing. The diamond is also brittle and can fracture if struck against a hard surface.

    SOME FACTS ABOUT DIAMOND

The diamond's value is based on four criteria: color, cut, clarity and carat. The clarity and color of a diamond are generally graded. Though scales are not standardized. A clarity grade of "slightly included" may represent a different grade on one grading system versus another, depending on the terms used in the scale. Make sure you know how a particular scale and grade represent the color or clarity of the diamond you are taking into consideration. A diamond can be described as "flawless" only if it has no detectable surface or internal imperfections when viewed under 10-power magnification by an expert diamond grader.

As with other gems, diamond weight is usually stated in carats. Diamond weight may be described in decimal or fractional parts of a carat. If the weight is given in decimal parts of a carat the figure should be exact to the last decimal place. For example, "20 carat" could represent a diamond that weight between 195 and 204 carat. Some retailers describe diamond weight in fractions and use the fraction to represent a range of weights. For example, a diamond described as 1/2 carat could weigh between 47 and 54 carat. If diamond weight is stated as fractional parts of a carat, the retailer should disclose two things first that the weight is not accurate, and second the reasonable range of weight for each fraction or the weight tolerance being used.

    TREATING DIAMONDS
Some diamonds may be treated to improve their appearance in similar ways as other gemstones. Since these treatments improve the clarity of the diamond, some jewelers refer to them as clarity improvement. One type of treatment fracture filling conceals cracks in diamonds by filling them with a foreign substance. This filling may not be permanent and jewelers should tell you if the diamond you are taking into consideration has been fracture filled.
Another treatment lasering involves the use of laser beam to improve the emergence of diamonds that have black inclusions or pots. A laser beam is aimed at the inclusion. Acid is then forced through a tiny tunnel m made by the laser beam to remove the inclusion. Lasering is permanent and a laser drilled stone does not require special care.
While a laser drilled diamond may appear as beautiful as a comparable untreated stone, it may not be as precious. That's because an untreated stone of the same quality is rarer and therefore more valuable. Jewelers should tell you whether the diamond you are considering has been laser drilled.

    DIAMOND JEWELRY
